The Plan now has a name. Because we all start somewhere.
After giving the matter due consideration – and by that, I mean a deeply personal audit of my physical condition, general motivation level, sock inventory, and the number of days I’ve spent walking like a stiff breeze might knock me over – I have come up with a plan.
And today, I’m announcing it:
From Couch to 1K in 30 Days
Now, I know that may sound a bit underwhelming to many. Ānd overwhelming for others. Especially for those who have been riding the auto-immune struggle bus for awhile, or any number of other vexing problems that can land us on our own bus. Don’t worry. The real beauty of this plan is how customizable it is. Just swap in your own variables to slip into a practically perfectlywhelming pocket. Here’s the magic formula with the variables.
From [your current state] to [your goal] in [a timeframe that feels both achievable and just slightly cheeky].
This plan isn’t about speed. Or even distance, really. It’s about showing up – stiff knees, crooked gait, questionable balance and all – and seeing if I can nudge myself forward one slow, sincere walk at a time. And it all starts with Day 0.
- It’s the day we outsmart our future excuses.
- The day we lay out the sweatpants and shirts so they don’t conveniently go missing when we need them.
- The day we find a route that doesn’t involve a hill steep enough to inspire poetry.
- The day we ask our doctor, “Hey, is this going to land me in physical therapy or glory?”
- The day we plan for weather, hydration, bathroom breaks, and how long it will take to look like we meant to walk this funny.
Day 0 is hope with a clipboard. A gentle rebellion against inertia. Removing barriers to entry. A quiet nod to future you, who may just thank you for thinking this and following through this time.
So yes, I’ve got a plan. Here’s me trying to go from “I’m Too Feeble” to “Let’s See What Happens.” And I’ll be chronicling it here—some walking, some wondering, hopefully some encouragement along the way. If you’re crafting a version of your own, I’d love to hear it in the comments. Apparently such parameters can be implemented on either side of being 60. So fire away: What’s your couch, your target, your timeframe?
Because sometimes the most powerful step we take isn’t the last one, it’s the first one. The one that gets you off the couch.
Or even the one that’s up before Day 1; it’s the all-important Day 0 (for noble reasons, but also because it can help you defer Day 1 until you are ready –so there’s that).
And away we go…
